Taking it in (Red Headed Woodpecker)
"Taking it in" Mixed media on canvas, 9" circle
I’m sure I’ve seen red headed woodpeckers growing up on the east coast. Their range is all over Maryland and Virginia but I don’t ever remember seeing one, hearing their call or seeing evidence of their ‘art’ on trees.
Recently, I’ve encountered dozens of them in Western Iowa. Either they are very active at the end of summer in western Iowa or Iowa is the place to find them. Seeing their bright red heads and Art Deco like color pattern as they flap from tree to tree is pretty remarkable and it makes me sad that I never noticed them before.
Lately I feel like I’ve been so wrapped up in the negative of the world that I’ve overlooked things that would make me smile. But this red headed woodpecker is reminding me to stop and take it all in. I hope it inspires you to stop and appreciate all that we take for granted.
That was the inspiration behind this red-headed woodpecker painting, an appreciation for something so strikingly beautiful. This painting combines thread, pastel and watercolor in circle format. It is available unframed but stretched on a loop. It can be sold framed for the cost of the frame. Please feel email me for more information.
Colors vary from screen to screen, the dominant colors in this painting are greens and turquoise against bright yellow and tan, with dark wings.
