Cathedral Rock, Sedona

I live here..

Sedona, Arizona
Well, I live in a place that beautiful red rock landscapes exist down the street from me.
 It's called Sedona, Arizona.
Thousands of tourists flock here to hike, explore, and stand in awe of these amazing red rock formations.

Cathedral Rock, Sedona Arizona
Who can blame them really? It's quite a spectacular sight when you first stumble upon them.
Sedona is also known for it's spiritual community, and the famous vortexes. Vortexes are places where the Earth is exceptionally alive with energy and people can feel it when they stand there or something like that. I'm not really sure, but thousands of people come to Sedona seeking out these vortexes in order to discover something about themselves. Recently, a friend of mine came to visit Sedona for the day, and went with a guide to one of these vortexes that is apparently located at Cathedral Rock. She shared how wonderful the experience was at dinner afterwards, and it got me curious. I had been to Cathedral Rock before, but it had been years. So with nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon, I took a hike to Cathedral rock in search for this vortex.

I'm not sure if I found the exact location of this Vortex in question,
but I did find beauty...

And some interesting trees...

Spiney trees
flooded trees

Even if I probably wasn't in the right vortex spot and definitely didn't know exactly what one does at a vortex... I did find it beautiful and moving for me. One doesn't need to believe or understand Sedona magic to recognize an inspiring landscape that moves you to create... even if it just asks to become a magnet.

Exploding Volcano has been selected to be a part of 2016 National Juried Art & Science exhibit at Indiana East University!

Exploding Volcano
Exhibition Dates: March 28 - May 13, 2016
Reception and Juror's Lecture (Lily Simonson): April 21, 2016, 5-7 p.m., Tom Thomas Gallery

The reception, juror’s lecture, and the announcement of awards will take place on April 21 at Tom Thomas Gallery and the Community Room, both located in Whitewater Hall from 5‑7pm. The events are free and open to public.
The Juror's explanation of the jury process from Indiana East University:
"I sought to include works that relate to the theme of art and science in ways that are original and multi-faceted. While the majority of submissions fit the theme in some way, the most distinguished pieces built on the long tradition of art and science working in concert by either saying something new about that intersection, exploring a specific aspect of science, or using scientific methodologies to create the work. Another set of criteria related to each artist's discussion of their work. The strongest submissions were accompanied by a clear written explanation of how the work related to the theme of art and science. At the same time, the conceptual basis for the piece was evident in the work itself, rather than leaning heavily on the accompanying text. Other more pragmatic issues were also considered. For example, it was difficult to accommodate especially long video pieces or physical works that exceeded the maximum dimensions outlined in the call.” - Lily Simonson
The entire exhibit can be found online and there will be a catalog of the show available.
It's an incredible show, and I'm so honored and excited to be a part of it!!

New work at Kiyoshi Ramen 'n' More

There is a new restaurant in Prescott, Arizona called Kiyoshi Ramen 'N' More.

Picture
Owned by Celeste and Guy Agena, Kiyoshi Ramen 'N' More offers authentic Hawaiian cuisine for lunch and dinner. They just had their grand opening on March 18th. Prior to their opening, and some months ago, Celeste got in touch with me to design her logo and help with her business' brand. For my day job, I help small business create branding profiles that include designing everything from logos to brochures. At that time, I was just starting to work on my volcano paintings, which are heavily inspired by Kilauea, located on the Big Island of Hawaii.
While we were working on her designs, I showed her a few of my paintings that I was working on. And she loved them so much that she asked me to exhibit my work in her restaurant when she opened, especially because they fit perfectly in her Hawaiian theme!

So flash forward 5 months, I now have new work on display at her restaurant!

And a collection of older work that is ocean related...kind of...

I'm very excited to share my work with her customers, for the next few months. If you are in the Prescott region, her restaurant is located at 1024 Willow Creek Rd, right next to the Safeway. Celeste and Guy are wonderful people, and their restaurant is a wonderful addition to the community.

Art & Science at Manheim Gallery - March/April 2016

The annual Theme exhibition for the Manhiem Gallery is here! This year's theme was "Art & Science," which is of course right up my alley. I have never participated in a juried exhibit at the Manheim gallery, but I thought this was one I couldn't pass up!

So I submitted three of my paintings - two new Volcano works, and a wildfire drawing/painting that has not been exhibited anywhere else, called Crackling. All three were accepted, and 'Awakening the Dragon' won 3rd place!

"Crackling" on display in the exhibit
'Awakening the Dragon' and 'Earth's Lung breathing' fit perfectly into the Art & Science theme not only because of their subject matter (volcanology), but also because of their 3D quality. These paintings pop or as I like to imagine, erupt, when viewed through 3D glasses. The 3D glasses allow the eye to see the warm colors come forward, and the cool colors recede, giving a whole new experience for the viewer to see the painting and experience the volcanoes.

The 'Art & Science' exhibit is on display from March 19th through April 9th in Cottonwood, Arizona. So if you are in the area, be sure to stop in and see the paintings in 3D! The exhibit also includes 17 different local artists, all creating unique interpretations of how Art & Science interact. Definitely check it out if you can.

Wildlife of Arizona - or really the southwest

3/1/2016

I've traveled to some beautiful places over the last couple of years...

Rocky mountain park, colorado
Zion National Park
Cotton field, southern arizona
Grand Canyon
Lake powell, arizona
riparian preserve, arizona

And along the way... I've met some interesting characters...

Harris Hawk
herd of elk
Big horn sheep
Ostrich
Golden mantle squirrel
tortoise
These encounters - maybe random, maybe intentional - have been unique, special and inspiring. To have the chance to really meet the personality that lives inside a Big Horn sheep that grazes inches away from you. To accidentally trip over a tortoise (hey it happens)... or to feed an ostrich and pet a Harris Hawk... all of them remind you that the spirit of life is beyond our little reality we define as society, culture, or humanity. We share this planet with incredible creatures, all great and small, and we forget that. Sure we remember the dogs and cats we feed, but when was the last time we shared space with the wild without fear? Fear - from them, or fear from us.
That's the source of thought and inspiration behind a new collection of pastel drawings I'm exhibiting at the Verde Brewing Company this spring. The exhibit opens March 3rd for their first Art & Beer dinner.

Here are some of the drawings...
