Tasty Mesquite - Desert Cottontail
I tend to draw animals eating. This is because most of the time when I encounter them in the wild, they are eating. When they are eating is also the best time to photograph them because they are more interested in the grass, or in this case mesquite pod than me and my camera. So, when I'm back in my studio looking at my reference photos, they tend to all be animals eating. This little desert cottontail just munched away on mesquite pods and let me get pretty close to him/her.

Jackrabbit - The Great Hare
The Great Hare, 14 inches wide and 11 inches tall - Soft pastel on paper.
Jackrabbits are not rabbits, but hares. These long legged hares are amazing to encounter in the wild. Although fearful and fast, I've had experiences where the jackrabbit was more curious than anything else. One time while I was photographing some birds, a jackrabbit came over and sniffed my arm. And then just sat there while I took pictures of him/her. It was an interesting experience to witness curiosity in such an otherwise fearful animal... Ever since then, I've fallen in love with Jackrabbits.

Cool Off (Round Tailed Ground Squirrel)
When a squirrel needs to cool off, you'll find them laying their bellies down against the ground and spreading out their legs. I've discovered that they will do this even if you are staring at them with pencil and paper. Perhaps it's their favorite pose to be still in. This pastel painting is of a little round tailed ground squirrel cooling off on a hot spring day in Arizona.
